The simple fact that there will be Pokémon in it is a sign that it's not just "western" fantasy, we do have Pokémon like Shiftry, Froslass in the series, which are based on youkai =P

Also, perhaps this would be a good place for this character concept I've had with no idea what to use it for. Basically, I had this idea involving a pair of twin witches running a shop, the older more responsible twin doing fortune telling, and the younger one basically being a Mad Scientist (except with magical potions instead of science) who sells magical potions.

Would that fit this particular kind of fantasy story?

I don't know anything about non-western fantasy, but tengu are crow-people, right? (Or raven people, I'm not sure)

Also, I don't see a problem with mermaids. I can't think of anything else to go with Water types, anyway.

I dunno, we don't necessarily need a race for every type. I'd rather not shoehorn stuff in.

That said, are there any good undead-y races that are more generic/common? Vampires or something?

Oh, also, what about Warforged? I don't know a ton about them, but if we do decide to come up with something for each type, it could be a good match for Steel types.

I think I have a lot of fun with those two, such as the older sister's reactions to the younger sister's antics. For example:

Younger sister: (to a customer at the shop) "Hi, I'm working on a new potion and I need some more ingredients, could I have some of your hair?" :3

Older sister: (face palm)

Okay, so revised list:

Humans: Normal
Elves: Grass
Dwarves: Rock
Halflings: Ground
Orcs: Fighting
Gnomes: Possibly Fairy
Dragonborn: Dragon
Tieflings: Fire
Drow: Dark
Wood Elves: Bug
Warforged: Steel
Tengu: Flying
Vampires: Ghost
Mermaids: Water

That's a good portion of the types. The only ones we're missing are Ice, Psychic, Electric, and Poison.

Unless anyone has a really good idea for those four, I suggest we go with this list. Maybe the last four aren't associated with any particular race, but individuals? Like, an assassin might use Poison types, a mage that likes lightning spells might use Electric, etc. So any race can use them as well as any other.

I say keep them as a sort of loose guideline, but characters don't necessarily have to stay within their class or fit into a defined one.

And I would say it wouldn't influence type affinity any more than any job might influence it normally. Like, a mage that likes to use lightning powers might have an affinity for Electric types because they use them a lot, but no more than a hiker would have an affinity for Rock or Ground types.

It's our own fantasy setting. We're just using D&D as a base.

And OK, Crewe. Main reason I asked was I wanted a half-elf sorceress that uses a Dark type because she likes darkness magic.

There's no reason the races can't use types outside their race's type affinity, especially if it fits with their lifestyle choices. : P

That's neat, Tangent! I like it!

We need to take into account all the different terrain types we need. I'd suggest we include as much as we can, so we always have options. So, say, mountains, various types of forests, plains, swamps, lakes, deserts, rivers, maybe some manner of icy area?

Once we have a crude map, we can look at it and sort out cities and such.

Okay guys, I drew a map. I have some worldbuilding ideas about cities and such, which I'll post in a bit.

EDIT: City names are red, landmark etc. names are black. Bright green is plains, yellow-y green is prairie/hills, normal green is deciduous type woods, dark green is more coniferous woods, red is desert. Those bits around the desert are slightly less deserty desert. Triangles are mountains, blue is water, if you couldn't figure that out on your own. Brown lines are main roads.

I think the term you might be looking for to describe the less deserty areas is scrubland.
