Topic: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Unnamed Pokemon meets High Fantasy World!

Basically, this is an excuse for everyone to take their favorite fantasy works, mix 'em all together, and throw Pokemon into that mix. But since some didn't seem to think it would fit as a WAAPT arc (some thought the initial proposal excluded Pokemon entirely, which was not my intention at all) I decided to make it a sandboxy sub-RP.

Currently, all I have is this:

* Magic is a much bigger thing in this universe, (which needs a name; any suggestions?) and is a predominant force.

* There are eighteen races, all aligned to a Pokemon type. For example, humans are Normal, dwarves are Rock, and elves are Fairy. :P

* Pokemon exist alongside these races, and live with races aligned to their type more frequently than others.

Why do I have so little? Well, I was hoping we could all fill in the gaps!

Questions, comments, and especially ideas are all welcome.

This idea makes me a very happy child oh yus.

Now, from the chat and this description, basically there's a fantasy universe filled with magical races, Pokémon, and adventures. And dungeons. And dragons.

So, it's an homage to the fantasy genre, yes?
It is delicious.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I vote to name it the land Gygax.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Suggestions for race/type combos:

Normal-Humans

Water-Merfolk, Water nymphs

Fire-Dragons, if non-mon dragons are a think, a theoretical race of lizard people

Grass-Elves, forest nymphs, satyr-type creatures

Dark-demons, devils, yugoloths,

Steel-Dwarves (voting this over Rock because smiths)

Fighting-Orcs

Ghost- ...Ghosts.

Ground-Halflings (Hobbits)

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Hobbits are an offshoot of Men/Humans, so I was thinking they'd have the same Type association.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

...What about Bug, huh? :p

And how does this affect dual-types? Because flying mons...

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Silent: It shouldn't. They're associated with one-type. Unless half-whatevers are a thing.

And I support Hobbits for Ground, though if Fire were lizard people, what would Dragon be?

And I can't think of a high fantasy example for insects, though my knowledge is kind of limited.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I don't think there should be a set number of races, so we don't have to shoehorn races into types, or leave out ones we would like because we have more than one race for a type.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Hmmm... Crewe has a point. Any suggestions for some other system?

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I dunno, but I want to do a Wheel of Time sequence at some point. :P

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

We could just come up with all the races we want to have in there first, and then assign types to them afterwards.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Type-proficiency is decided on a race-by-race basis, with two types they're generally good with and one they're generally bad with or something similar?

How about having the area where the races live determine their Pokémon typing? Elves live in forests, so they'd be around Grass-, Normal-, and Flying-types. Dwarves would still use Ground, as they're miners, but could also use Rock. Humans are an odd case, seeing as they have cities all around.

Rapidash are universal, being a primary mode of locomotion. Unless you're a Dwarf, because they don't like horses. And hobbits prefer Ponyta.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Angels or harpies/bird-people for Flying, I presume?

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I don't mind the idea of every race having a type they're associated with, I just don't like limiting the races we can have to ones that fit with each type, with only one race per type.

I do like Crow's idea, though.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Yeah, Crow's idea sounds good.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

So I guess the first step would be to come up with a list of races that we want in this world.

I personally want drow. Totally mainstream, I know, but hey. :P

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I personally want some sort of Dragonborn/Draconian-esqe race, as well as elves and dwarves (gotta go with the staples after all).

Dark elves of some sort like Crewe mentioned could be cool too.

I always feel like I'm the only one who plays humans exclusively...

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Wizards! Wizards are important. I'd imagine they'd like to have Psychic and Fairy Pokémon around.

22

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Are wizards a race? Can't anything be a wizard?

Technically, yes. The traditional definition would be a human with magical powers. I don't believe Dwarves/Elves/Hobbits/etc. can be wizards.

The term is flexible, though.

24

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Wizards can be any race, from what I've seen. Some make better wizards than others.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Well, if this RP were to have one overarching plot, I think it'd be cool to have a sort of traditional "defeat the Big Bad" storyline. The Big Bad could be a mix of plenty of fantasy baddies (Sauron, Voldemort, etc.)

If we were to have arcs like WAAPT, we could do a theme of parody/homage for a single fantasy work per arc. For example, one arc would feature homages and parodies of Eragon, another for HP, and so on.
