-Crewe lays down beside him, curling up on her side to face him-
Yeah. Elevators are neat. 'Course, considering how much walking there is to do in this city, I like having Maul around to make it a little less.
Herbert: So do I. Still, it doesn't hurt to take a little walk every once in a while. Just to admire the scenery, of course.
-He gives a yawn, then rolls over onto his front.-
Herbert: I'm getting tired. I think I'm going to try and get some sleep. Goodnight, Crewe.
-He closes his eyes.-
Hm. I guess. Trees and bushes and buildings and stuff. I usually fly.
-she smiles, then grabs a pillow and pushes it under his head-
Good night, Herbert.
-she rolls out of bed and goes to stand looking out the window for a few minutes before returning to the bed and curling up under the covers to sleep-
-Herbert gives a small smile as Crewe pushes a pillow beneath his head, though it fades as she goes to stare out of the window. Nevertheless, he remains quiet and continues to feign sleep until he eventually drifts off for real.-
-Crewe sleeps late, as is her wont-
-Herbert is sitting on a bench somewhere in the city with Oracle in his lap, looking noticeably more cheerful than usual.-
-Crewe walks around with a bag of galettes hanging from her wrist, humming to herself. She notices Herbert sitting on a bench and goes over to sit down next him. She pulls out a galette and offers it to him-
Cookie? They have some weird name, but they taste good.
-Herbert looks over at Crewe as she comes to sit down next to him.-
Herbert: Oh, sure. Thanks.
Oracle: <Would it be alright if I had one as well?>
Herbert: You'd have to ask her about that, not me.
-He takes the gallette, then starts gently petting Oracle with one hand and taking a couple of bites out of the galette with the other.-
Herbert: Mmm... you're right, that is tasty. I'm starting to wonder why I didn't come to Kalos sooner. Wonderful scenery, good food, beautiful women... it's got everything a guy could want.
-Crewe hands him a galette, then smiles at Oracle and fishes one out for her as well-
Sure, Oracle. Here.
-she offers the Fennekin the galette, then raises an eyebrow at Herbert-
"Beautiful women", Herbert, really? You're going to say that right in front of me?
Oracle: <Thank you.>
-She takes the galette in her mouth and starts eating it, whilst Herbert gives Crewe a small smirk.-
Herbert: What, did I imply that you weren't included in that category or something?
-Crewe looks somewhat flustered, her face flushing-
I--
-she punches his arm lightly-
You're ridiculous, fruitcake.
-Herbert's smirk only grows broader even as Crewe punches him in the arm.-
Herbert: And you love me for it.
-He goes back to munching on his galette.-
That's true. But it's still infuriating.
-she eats her galette and pets Oracle-
-Oracle remains passive for a moment as she is pet, then starts to nuzzle Crewe's hand. Herbert, meanwhile, finishes off his galette and looks down at Oracle.-
Herbert: You know, Oracle here isn't going to be a Fennekin forever. When do you think you're going to evolve, Oracle?
Oracle: <Eighty-three point one two nine seven five per cent change I reach my second stage of evolution within the next three months. Fifty-eight point nine four six three six chance I reach my final stage of evolution within the next year.>
Herbert: Guess we'll see just how long you remain small and pettable for, then.
-He scratches her behind the ears.-
I like Fennekin more than… that thing that comes next, anyways. 'Course, it's up to Oracle if she wants to evolve or not. Still, I like pettable things.
-she smiles and pets Oracle-
I used to have a Rattata… she was really young, never battled except for once, and that was a huge mistake. Her name was Dana. Sweetest Pokemon you'd ever meet. She would go with me everywhere, riding on my head or shoulder…
-her smile fades-
She travels with Steven Stone now. I haven't seen her in… years.
-Herbert is quiet for a moment as he tries to think of a way to tactfully continue the new thread of conversation. Naturally, he fails.-
Herbert: ...I guess you must've had a lot of Pokemon at one point or another. Do you ever go and visit any of them, aside from Henry and Thistle?
-Crewe goes very quiet for a moment before replying-
No. I mean, yes, I had a lot of Pokemon, but… I haven't seen any of them in a long, long time, except for one, and she hates me… Of course, they probably all hate me now. Not that I can blame them.
-Herbert, unsure of what to say, puts a hand on Crewe's shoulder.-
Herbert: I... I think you're being a little too hard on yourself. From what I've seen, you treat Clockwise well, and Henry and Thistle still seem to like you. Being a trainer's a hard job, after all, and... well, I'm really not the best at it myself. I'm surprised that half my team hasn't already walked out on me.
-His expression darkens slightly.-
Herbert: Besides, there's plenty of trainers out there that don't give a damn about their Pokemon. Trainers who just use them as tools, abuse them, or... or worse. But you... you make an effort to try and care, at least. And as far as I'm concerned, so long as you do that much, then you're not a bad trainer.
-Crewe shakes her head-
No… they shouldn't. It's because they're kids. They just don't know any better. The rest of them… Every time I gave the option, half my team told me they wanted to be released. Does that sound like a good Trainer to you?
-she looks somewhat more distraught as he continues on-
That was me. You didn't know me when I was younger. When I Trained Pokemon? Like, really Trained Pokemon? I was horrible to my Pokemon. And I didn't… I didn't even realize until I'd failed horribly, and then when I asked my Pokemon if they wanted to leave me… so many said yes...
-Herbert is silent for a short while, then pulls Crewe into a tight hug.-
Herbert: Look, I'm... I'm not going to tell you that you're mistaken somehow, or just beating yourself up over nothing. Because you're right: I didn't know you back then, and I don't know what kind of trainer you were. But even if you were as bad as you say you are, that's not the Crewe I know today. You've learnt from whatever mistakes you made when you were a kid. It's obvious that you care about Clockwise, and Clockwise clearly cares about you.
-He then gives a small sigh.-
Herbert: Besides... at least your Pokemon waited for you to ask before leaving...
-Crewe hugs him back tightly-
If you say so… Thank you, Herbert.
-she pulls back slightly to meet his eyes-
Kirk leaving wasn't your fault. He thought you were dead. And it's not like you could possibly have told him otherwise, or warned him you were going. You didn't have any more choice in going to Ransei than I did in ending up in Isolde's cave.
-Herbert meets Crewe's eyes for a moment before looking down at the ground.-
Herbert: Even if I had been able to tell him, I don't think it would've made a lot of difference... we'd been going through a rough patch for a while, and before I could realise that I needed to try and make things up I went and abandoned him. I think that was the last straw, from his point of view...
-He closes his eyes.-
Herbert: ...Six years. I spent six whole years travelling with him, and I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye...
-Crewe squeezes his arm-
But you didn't abandon him. It wasn't your fault. Even if you didn't realize you needed to talk to him then… you do now, right?
-she takes his hand-
Herbert, look at me. You love Kirk, don't you? You want to make it up to him?
-Herbert tenses slightly upon contact with Crewe, continuing to avoid her gaze.-
Herbert: Of course I do, it's just that... at this point, I don't know if there's anything that I can do to make it up to him...
-He opens his eyes again, and looks back up at Crewe, his expression and tone virtually blank.-
Herbert: I'm sorry... coming from me, this must all sound rather pathetic, mustn't it?
Herbert, we're going to find Kirk, and we're going to make him understand how much you want to make it up to him. I'm sure he can come up with something, even if you can't.
-she shakes her head-
No. Of course not. Missing your Pokemon is never pathetic.
