Topic: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Hello everyone! Dune here with a special project I've been planning for a while now that might just interest you.

I'm going to be playing X-Com: Enemy Unknown. But that's not all! I'll be playing it with nothing but fellow WAAPTers as squad members! And it'll be a completely blind run! What fun!

But Dune, I have never heard of this collection of 1's and 0's that you call a game! What is it about?

I'm glad you asked, convenient bold text! X-Com: Enemy Unknown is a turn based strategy game about a multinational project that is defending Earth from an army/navy of invading aliens. I will be taking the role of commander while all of you (yes, YOU) will be my instruments of tactical death on the field.

Golly Gee! What do I have to do to be a part of this?

First off, unless you're old enough that you remember when Kaiser Wilhelm was leader of Germany, you should never say "Golly Gee". Second, nothing really. I will attempt to have the names I give my Squaddies make sense (I.e. have FullMoon as a Brazilian) and gender-appropriate (though Eskay may be an exception). I make no guarantee that the class you get will make sense, however. Beri might end up being a Support for all I know. Otherwise, just pop in every once in a while to see how the troopers are doing and we'll go from there.

What if don't get a trooper in the first wave of recruits?

Sadly, that's bound to happen. However, all you have to do is wait until I Frillish thing up and get someone killed, and as long as I know you want a trooper, I'll try and accommodate. Also, let me know if you're cool for having the trooper only male, only female, or you don't really care.

So what now?

Now... I get through the tutorial. Sad, but true. Also, work, so the first mission won't be up until this afternoon. Until then, let me know what you think of the idea, and start placing bets as to whom dies first!

EDIT: Let's get this started!

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

I bet Straw dies first. Because he just has to.

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Alright, the tutorial is now done!

Really, since I had almost nothing to do of my own volition involving what happened, I'm just gonna skip most of it in this post. Long story short, my second is incredibly Genre Blind and he got most of my squad killed. All that remained was a single male Heavy from Argentina.

In honor of the very first WAAPTer, he shall be renamed Gamer Rex.

Now, let's see who else I have...

Well, crap. Everyone else is a recruit. Ah well, let's see who and where from.

EDIT: NAMES!

Gamer Rex: Argentinian Male, Heavy
Blu Beri: Italian Male
Sneasel Crewe: German Female
Darker Shining: US Female
Redeyes Zeal: Mexican Male
Mezzo Piano: Scottish(!) Female
Full Moon: Brazilian Male
Mc Tagg: Egyptian Male
Joshua Umbramatic: Israeli Male
Flavored Straw: Irish Male
Tracer Bullet: Also Irish Male
Silent Reverence: Russian Male

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

You could make that American female Mezzo.

5

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Operation: Glass Justice

Deployed: Gamer Rex, Beri, DS, Crewe

Notable events: Rex gets three of the four enemies by himself, Beri picks up the last, with Crewe and DS mostly missing out of the combat (sorry).

Funny things: One grenade tore apart a whole warehouse and killed two aliens in one go. Beri gets a promotion... and he's a Support.

...

BAHAHAHAHAHA!

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Operation: Cold Giant

Objective: Rescue one Anna Sing from Alien territory.

Deployed: Rex, Beri, Mezzo, Straw

Notable moments: Mezzo killed three aliens by herself, without explosives. Straw received two. Both received promotions, with Mezzo as an Assault (shotgun toter) and Straw as a Sniper.

Funny Moments: Rex mowed down a Thin Man right as it entered the field.

Casualties: Mezzo and Straw, wounded and in medbay for eleven and five days, respectively.

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

I'm an American male.

We shall defeat legions of Cipher Peons... by performing an elaborate musical number!

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Operation: Dying Skull

Objective: Assault a downed UFO

Deployed: Rex, Beri, Straw, Crewe

Notable moments: Rex shot the last alien with a Rocket Launcher; the poor thing went ragdolling off of the map. Crewe survived a barrage of plasma fire without a scratch. Crewe also got a promotion, and is now a Support.

Funny moments: Straw didn't die!

Casualties: None!

Also, I unfortunately can't decide the nationality of my recruits. THAT BEING SAID, I'll try and accommodate should one show up.

Casualties: Rex is wounded, out for five days. Mezzo is down for four.

Lesson learned: GET STRAW A BETTER RIFLE.

EDIT: Post op rewards: New recruit, Sergeant Assault, Japanese female. Beri got a nickname: "Voodoo".

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Honestly, who didn't expect Straw to die first? :P

15

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

So, I'm not going to do the "one post per op" thing anymore, I'm just gonna throw out summaries every morning to save space (and not cause me to lose track of what I was doing.)

Since the last operation, things have been getting a little tense. I'm now fighting big, ugly things called Mutons on a regular basis, and I had my very first encounter with Chryssalids during a Terror mission. The Mutons carry heavy weapons, including grenades, while the Chryssalids can cause a MotherFrillishing zombie apocalypse.

On the troops side of things, Rex hit the max rank of Colonel, and is officially one of the most Badass men on Earth. Mezzo is close behind, and alongside DS, Crewe, Beri, and Umbra, form my most elite troops. DS, Crewe, and Umbra also got new nicknames. DS is Snake Eyes (Possibly for a near impossible shot against a Thin Man, who has Hellish Pupils), Crewe's is Gypsy, and Umbra's is Nero (*snerk*).

Sadly, not everything is good news, as I lost Tangent to a plasma grenade. He makes my second non-plot ordained death, and was, incidentally, also a sniper.

Tech production is coming along after I managed to shoot down a Battleship-class UFO, and everyone has laser weaponry and second-gen battle armor. Right now I'm assaulting a landed (not shot down) UFO, so we'll see what goodies that turns up.

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

... BAHAHAHAHA.

I totally called Straw's death.

17

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

I really did try to avoid it, but I had no idea that he would get flanked by a whole squad of alien super soldiers.

Also, Tangent died trying to hold down a Drone (giant flying anti-infantry robot) while Umbra fell back due to being wounded by a Thin Man sniper.

I'd say, as deaths go, theirs were pretty understandable if not awesome.

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Well... damn.

I FUBAR' d things badly. Because I was slow getting my satellites up, I lost quite a few countries to panic, and now I'm stuck in a corner. I... think I'll just reset, since I'm just dying a slow death before the next Council report and they shut me down.

So!

Time to reset.

19

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Silent Reverence: Russian Male

Yes, comrade!!!!! *hums*

Time to reset.

…Do not waaaaaaant! :c

Still, good luck next try~

Thou hast forgotten the face of thy Lord. Remember, mortal, and fear pet me.

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

And Now For Something Extremely Similar

Huzzah! After finally getting through the Early Game Hell, I'm now on a role!

After reapplying names, some people's classes have changed and some haven't. For example, Crewe is still a Support, while Umbra is a Sniper.

In a nutshell, I got my defensive satellite grid up first thing, and now I'm swimming in cash. That also provides me with plenty of cool stuff, like captured plasma weaponry and made-from-scratch beam weaponry. In other word, things are going much more smoothly.

On the main roster we have Mezzo and Pent as Assaults, and the two of them are having a competition to see who can capture the most aliens alive. Pent currently has the lead at a grand total of 8.

Umbra has gone from a Heavy in the last game to a Sniper, and he is freaking death incarnate. He can peg a Muton between the eyes at over fifty meters, and has an ability that let's him snipe at ridiculous distances so long as any squad mate can see the target.

Tagg and Verax have become my new Heavies, and when their not debating proper Sandvich etiquette, they're either tearing up robotic enemies with armor piercing ammo and blowing stuff up with rockets.

Crewe is still my main medic, and she's also the first member of the squad to test out the new plasma weaponry. Needless to say,  she apparently has a lot of fun with it.

Others on the roster that don't see as much action include Ren, who's a support; Psyche, who's a sniper; and Herbert, who's a heavy.

Now, however, comes the hard part. Chrissalids have begun showing up, and those suckers are mean.

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Major Update: You're all Spartans!

Now that I have your attention, uuuuuupdaaaaaate~!

First off: Powered Armor! Every one in my main squad (Umbra, Mezzo, Tagg, Crewe, Verax, and Pentigan) are all decked out in nigh invisible prototype power armor. Yes, prototype.

Second, Plasma weapons! Crewe isn't the only one on the field with green globs of death now.

Third, Psionics! We're going to see just who has the strongest brain in the roster soon.

And fourth, I forgot to put down nicknames of my Mane Main Six. Here they are:

Umbra: "Stalker"
Verax: "Flash" (Aaa~aaaah!)
Crewe: "Prophet"
Tagg: "Casino"
Mezzo: "Hardcore" (which in this case is absolutely appropriate.)
Pentigan: "Desperado"

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Ah! That reminds me: will you get one after Magic, like you said?

23

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Indeed I have! However, she hasn't seen much action yet, but considering I can deck her out in Titan Armor now, I can now feel confident that she won't bit it on her first few missions.

24

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

The first Gifted revealed!

The honor of our first confirmed Psi-trooper is...

*Drumroll*

Mezzo! As if being a power armored, shotgun toting Colonel nicknamed "Hardcore" wasn't Badass enough.

25

Re: Dune Plays: X-Com: Enemy Unknown; or, We Are All Pokémon Squaddies

Thanks, Dune!

Any named for me?

And YAY MEZZO!
