Topic: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

So, as anyone who has played the new games' post-League plot knows, Anabel gets another appearance after being absent for three generations, and chances are you've probably been on the receiving end of my fangirlish squealing about her. And as such, you probably know as well that I very much want to adapt her new development into her WAAPT incarnation...

Problem is, our universe-blending traditions have made it so that a direct adaptation is impossible, because Sun and Moon's universe is distinctly not blended with whatever one Anabel hails from, be it the canon pre-Mega/Z timeline or a separate Bad Timeline (such as, say, the one in Generations where the protagonist isn't around to stop Archie for Some Reason I'm not saying it was Ultra Beasts, but it was Ultra Beasts). That said, I have been developing ideas about how the events that happened in G7 Anabel's past could be implemented into WAAPT's own Anabel's history.

First off, it's important to remember that the WAAPT Frontier Brains were stated to have been a J-Team-esque group of their own before the Battle Frontier was established; that's how they are so buddy-buddy with so many different Legendary Pokemon, enough to call for their presence in official Frontier battles. Considering the sort of things the J-Team get themselves into, I have no doubt that they got into similar situations themselves; heck, Brandon himself joined the J-Team to help defeat the Glitch Regigigas this very arc. Considering that according to Looker, the Ultra Beasts have been popping up throughout history but only fairly recently got classified the way they did, I figure the Frontier Brains might have been one of the forces trying to keep them contained.

And then Anabel got sucked into the Ultra Wormhole.

Now, here's where the WAAPT version and the SM version differ. Where the Anabel that appears in the Ultra Beast plot is distinctly from another universe, the Anabel that has appeared very recently in WAAPT is definitely the same one that was always here, as Oblivia!Entei (and probably Raikou and some Latios from somewhere) can attest to. That said, it's entirely possible that WAAPT!Anabel could be the same sort of Faller that the game's own protagonist is -- got dragged into Ultra Space, and then happened to get spit out in the correct universe instead of the wrong one. Perhaps she still got amnesia, but less severe than SM's Anabel got, or possibly that she recovered some of her memories because unlike in SM, the other Frontier Brains were there to be a sort of Constant for her. She still became an Interpol agent and then a chief, but then upon encountering her fellow Frontier Brains, recovered her memories and resumed Battle Tower work while still being a semi-active Interpol agent on the side.

Which, of course, nobody but her fellow Brains, Scott, and other members of the International Police are aware of.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Is Anabel A and Anabel 1 a possibility? Like, one fell down the Nido Ultra Wormhole from another 'verse and became Interpol Cheif while the native one became a Frontier Brain? :P

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

Personally, I prefer the idea of there being two Anabels, the one from the International Police being from another universe no one on  the J-Team has likely spent much time in yet, but that's mostly me finding the idea of the two Anabels meeting at some point amusing.

As much as I love the A-and-1 running gag, I also know firsthand that managing two separate, simultaneously-present versions of the same character in one universe for extended periods of time can get really frustrating and exhausting, hence why I pushed the Amarin twins back into one single Amarin oldest-child :P

plus i have amazing ideas about their reaction to the fact that Anabel, someone they've been friends with for over a year now, was secretly part of the international police the whole time

Do keep in mind that each Anabel could have a separate writer at a time, which could tone down the frustration a fair bit.

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

That does depend on whether anyone else is particularly interested in writing for Interpol Anabel, but true.

(I'm still kinda hesitant though due to the aforementioned experience and the fact that a lot of people in and out of the RP that I've talked to haven't had much investment in Anabel as a character beyond "hey Bittersweet might be excited about this postgame thing." Which, needless to say, I was, I literally squealed when I saw her :P)

If my idea doesn't pass, I will still probably do some sort of alternate-WAAPT-canon ficlet where it is what happened, assuming I work up the energy for it, but still, I was kinda hoping to do some canon-and-WAAPTverse integration rather than separation because I see so much potential for it.

I'd totally write for her if it weren't for the fact I still want out of this RP properly ASAP and plan on finally getting the two megaspags started once I finish my Yuletide entry for Serebii.

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

To be honest, I don't feel having two Anabels would be confusing. Then again, I'm also surprised to learn the merging of the Amarin twins was permanent and not just a temporary shenanigan - the "twins" solution, from my perspective, seemed like the most natural course of action. All that really shows is that I obviously have very different thought processes on these matters compared to you, but regardless, I have no on-principle objections to two Anabels.

I do, however, think your idea could help deal with the other problem you've pointed out, which is that we've suddenly been confronted with a plot where the demarcation between the 3DSverse and the original gameverse is laid out very clearly, while WAAPT has taken great pains to establish that the original gameverse and the 3DSverse are the same place. Then again, WAAPT has also established that a butt-ton of parallel universes exist, so who knows?

On a tangentially related note, I have some slightly idiosyncratic headcanons on how the whole "Ultra Beasts destroyin ur worldz" thing played out. Maybe those would be relevant?

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

See, the big problem I see with the "Ultra Beasts destroyed Anabel's world, wherever it was" thing is, it's such an un-WAAPT-like thing in a game that otherwise is full to the brim with things that would fit perfectly in the RP. Sure, we've had several bad timelines throughout the WAAPT multiverse, but out of all of them, I can only think of one that actually turned into a bad ending -- Robin's, and in his case it works because it is and always was an essential point of his story, that an apocalypse not only could, but did and had to happen. All the others, though, are still more or less surviving. The AU? Survived not one, but two catastrophes, and the branch where it didn't undo the second turned into PMD-B, where society has re-established itself as one of Pokemon only. Lillianna's timeline? There's plenty of people living in fear, but people are alive nonetheless. Even the implied universe where one version of the Delta Episode's meteor got displaced to was adapted into being the G1/2 universe, where the effects of the impact weren't mass extinction, but rather, the world being overrun by glitches -- and not ending because of it.

Because that's what we do in WAAPT. We adapt things. We make things work together, and that's what I was trying so hard to do here. Saying "hey, how about this world did end and one single character from there made it here alive" hurts. Especially when it creates a Decomposite Character where a composite one can work just fine. I never said that two of the same character was confusing, I said it was frustrating and exhausting, especially when one gets all the development and the other gets left out of the spotlight. That's the problem I have with the "twins" solution.

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

Ah, that clears it up. I'd been operating under the assumption that mere confusion was the reason, but if you feel it would help with character development if there was only one Anabel and only one Amarin child, that's reasonable enough.

TBH, I would have no problem with either layout, but lean single Anabel myself. This is mostly because it does make adapting several elements less of a hassle. On the other hand, my headcanon on the destruction thing involved the Nihilego - yes, specifically the Nihilego - being even more destructive than SuMo would have you believe, so I guess that's not an option if we don't think a single dead universe would fit the tone of the RP.

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

Yeah, I'd definitely prefer as little additional Death And Destruction(TM) as possible. G7 is already grim and dark enough without going, y'know, grimdark.

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

I'm not to the postgame yet, but unfortunately I've had this plot point spoiled for me. I'd like to have freaked out first seeing her like I did with Colress and Burnet and Grimsley.

But anyway, I do like the idea of there just being the one Anabel better, mostly for some of the reasons Bitter's listed. (Though, that said, I would probably find a scene with two Anabels meeting amusing. What if Anabel made it back to this universe a few months before she left due to spacetime weirdness, and it was encountering her past/future self that caused her memories to return? I don't know if that breaks canon or anything, sorry.)

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

Worth mentioning that no, the universe game!Anabel came from was not "destroyed" by the UBs. It was just a theory that was picked up and spread like wildfire.

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

Yeah, what Straw said. I'm replaying post game as we speak in my copy of Moon and no where does it say (or remotely imply without some really extreme logical jumps that can only be made by using "What if" as a preface to the arguement that) Interpol!Anabel's home universe was destroyed. Sure, there might have been a mess that had to be cleaned up in Interpol!Anabel's home universe, but it would like been only made in the area around where the wormhole opened up. As the destruction from the wormhole that caused Mohn to be a Faller and Nihilego to infect Lusamine didn't list any other bad things beyond the collateral damage that would have resulted in a the battle with the Nihilego.

Re: [G7 SPOILERS] A certain Interpol Chief's role in WAAPT

Yeah, that's what I'd thought when I first played through (well, technically I'd thought something like my proposed solution happened anyway, but after I realized that wasn't the case, tgat was my second interpretation). On a slightly-more-self-centered note, though, I just thought of a few ways that the One Anabel solution could work well with a few bits of some of my characters -- one of which being Rose, a fellow amnesiac who had to be informed of her past without remembering it herself (and my planned "active" character for Alola), and the other involves the more-or-less-official end of Sarah's character arc. But those are personal things that don't necessarily need to affect anyone's decisions if you don't want them to.
