Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

For another idea, not exclusionary to the above, we could do race-based plots, where the plot is defined by the situation of a particular race, then mingle some elements from whichever fandom we think can be fit well. I presume that making sure the mons still fit in the ambience is an important point.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I like the idea of doing more traditional defeat the Big Bad arcs.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Seconding Crewe, though Silent's idea is good as well.

My girlfriend is a Volcarona, your argument is invalid.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Silent's idea is good, though I have to agree with Crewe.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Pinging this because I really want to get it off the ground eventually, and because I had a question:

Back on the subject of races, can we have half-whatevers in this setting? Because I had a character concept in mind, and she works best as a half-elf. She can be human if necessary, though.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Did we decide what Ghost types are? I hope not Undead/Zombies. That would sadden me.

<Whatchu lookin at, PUNK?>

32

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I'm not really sure if it is a good or a bad idea to have half-whatevers, might make the relationships with the mons easier or harder depending on how other factors are thrown in (for example, how do they relate to dual-types?). Thouugh if it goes in, I hope it's not just an anthropocentric excuse for having "all the good stats and none of the bad ones". I mean, if there are human-elves there's no reason why there can't be mermaid-orcs or lizard-nymphs, right?

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Yes, I am very sick of zombies unless done creatively. >_<

And good points, Silent... I would like for the possible half-whatevers to be diverse as well. :P

34

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I don't see a problem with half-whatevers. Seems reasonable/makes sense to me.

Also on the subject of races, if we're trying to pick up the pace: maybe we should appropriate a list of races from something else, and then add on/subtract as we see fit, using that as a base? It might go faster than everyone individually deciding what races they want to see.

35

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

That's a good idea... But from where? Any suggestions?

36

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Hm... Skyrim? D&D? Pretty sure both have easily accessible wikis that probably have race lists.

37

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

D&D has a list of player races (there's also Wikipedia, though more confusing at it).  There is a list of humanoid species in one of the Zelda wikis (can't remember which one) and I'm sure M:tG has one as well. Dunno what would be a good starting base to pick and then add or substract from though, in particular because I don't know of any one that gives us enough coverage (taking Pokémon types into consideration) before we have to start adding from everywhere else.

Of course to be noted my knowledge in this area is fairly lacking.

38

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I feel like if we want to go with a more general fantasy, we should go with D&D over Zelda. Zelda races are pretty... not generic.

39

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Yeah, D&D works better for what we're going for than Zelda.

Question is... Which edition? I say we use both 3.5 and 4.

40

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Works for me. I'm hardly a D&D expert, though I know a little about 4e. Whatever you think works best.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

OK, I've got the sourcebooks for both, so I can post a list Soon(TM).

42

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Fantastic. I look forward to it.

43

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

OK, here's that list, finally.

Core Races in Both Editions:

Humans
Elves
Half-Elves (May not be necessary to list if we go with all sorts of half-whatevers being possible)
Dwarves
Halflings (Think Hobbits, only more rouge-ish)

Core Races in 3.5:

Half-Orcs (Thinking we could probably use actual orcs here)
Gnomes (In D&D, sort of a happy medium between elves and dwarves)

Core Races in 4:

Dragonborn (Dragon-like humanoids. A good race to associate with Dragon-types, I think.)
Tieflings (A race that looks rather devil-ish in apperance)
Eladrin (Sort of a more civilization-friendly sister race to elves)

OK right off the bat I think we can scrap Eladrin by folding them into Elves or replacing them with Dark Elves and keeping the rest. What does everyone else think?

My girlfriend is a Volcarona, your argument is invalid.

44

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

I do like these races.

I guess we can pretty easily do without the Eladrin, but I would like to use Dark Elves and Wood Elves alongside the normal ones.

45

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Hmmm, replace Eladrin with Dark and Wood elves, got it. Any other suggestions from anybody else, or does that list seem good?

My girlfriend is a Volcarona, your argument is invalid.

46

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

If we do go with these suggestions, here would be my suggestion for type affiliations:

Humans: Normal
Elves: Grass
Dwarves: Rock
Halflings: Ground
Orcs: Fighting
Gnomes: Ah... not sure here.
Dragonborn: Dragon
Tieflings: Fire
Drow: Dark
Wood Elves: Bug

47

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

That looks good, Crewe. And depending on when this RP gets off the ground, Gnomes can easily be Fairy. :P

My girlfriend is a Volcarona, your argument is invalid.

48

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Works for me.

And I'd say that if we don't come up with more races that we want, we can either double up some type affiliations (like, Dwarves are also Steel and Drow are also Ghost), or else make it so every race can use those mons equally as well.

49

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

Yeah, that sounds good.

Re: Pokemon-y Fantasy World Planning

May I suggest the Karasu Tengu for the Flying type race?
